Top 5 Best Propane Smokers

Many people around the world are turning to propane smokers. They allow you to cook your food at a more consistent temperature ? resulting in a delicious and tender taste.

Heating up faster than conventional electric smokers, they are ideal when you are cooking a meal for family or friends. No matter what the occasion, a reliable propane smoker could be a good addition to your home.

As a father who loves both outdoor and indoor cooking for my family, I am always looking for the latest products. After purchasing my first propane smoker, I realized that they allow you to cook foods easily, without the mess that a conventional oven produces.

If you are unsure as to what to look out for, we have reviewed an array of products to give you the best choice. But before we get into the reviews, we have laid out what you should consider when buying your first propane smoker:

Their Versatility

Even though propane smokers are ideal for smoking meats, there are many available on the market that extends far beyond that. For example, there is an array of combination smokers that is designed with both cooking surfaces and open flame sections. This clever solution means that you can cook a variety of foods at the same time.

The Size

If you are a first-time buyer, you will take into consideration the size of the propane smoker before you purchase it. Propane smokers come in a range of sizes. They can even have detachable legs, allowing them to be easily transported.

Before taking the leap and purchasing, have a think about where you are going to place the smoker and what you will use it for. Once you have an idea of this, you can start to look into which propane smoker is right for you.

A high-performance cooking surface

No matter what you want to cook on your smoker, one of the first things you should look out for is how effective the performance of it is. If you are purchasing the smoker so that you can cook for a large number of people at one time, you will also need to consider the size of the cooking surface.

How often you need to maintain it

You will also need to see how easily the propane smoker can be maintained and cleaned. Below, we have included some information regarding the frequency of maintenance on certain smokers to help make your decision a little easier.

How often should you replace parts of your propane smoker?

Over time, it?s clear that parts of your propane smoker might need to be replaced. Whether this is because of an accident or just wear and tear, it?s clear that no matter how much the smoker was, it will need to be maintained over time.

Therefore, it?s important that you do some research before purchasing on how easy it is to replace parts of the smoker.

Other features you should consider

Some may think that propane smokers are hard to assemble, but they mostly consist of 5 basic structures. These are a wood chip and water tray (which can sometimes be separate), vents on the side of the smoker, a main cooking chamber, a temperature gauge, and a propane gas cylinder.

Each propane smoker will vary in terms of the features it includes, but for the most part, they all work the same.

However, the price of the propane smoker might affect the amount of features that it has. Therefore, before you make a quick purchase, it?s a good idea to compare a variety of smokers so that you know that you are getting a good deal.

How to choose the right propane smoker

Everyone loves spending time outdoors when the weather is nice, and enjoy a delicious meal with their family. A great way to do this is with a propane smoker.

Propane smokers are known for adding versatility and a rich flavor to your food. This makes them (in my opinion) a must for anyone looking for an extraordinary cooking utensil.

So how do you choose the best propane smoker? With so many available on the market it can seem daunting. But there?s nothing to worry about.

To make the decision a little easier, we have created a list of the top 5 propane smokers on the market! Reviewing the size, value for money and features of each, you can make the best possible choice for your requirements.

5 – Smoke Hollow 38205GW 38-inch Propane Smoker

Starting off our list is the Smoke Hollow propane smoker. This product is not only portable due to its small frame but also has a window which is a great feature to have. This allows you to check on your food throughout the cooking process, without you having to open the door. I very much appreciated this feature as it meant that I could get on with my evening. I could talk to my friends and family, without having to keep checking on the food.

Containing 4 chrome cooking grids as well as a handy heat indicator, you will be able to cook for a large amount of people. This makes it a good choice for many. These grids are also adjustable which makes it easy to move food around.

Another great feature of this smoker is that it has a 2-door design. This separates the food chamber from the heat chamber. This makes it easier to control the heat of the food without affecting how cooked it is. Complete with spring wires and a rigid lock latch system, the doors can be easily tightened.

At an affordable price, this compact yet modern propane smoker is great value for money. However, one downfall of this product is that it can struggle with its heating capacity. With a seemingly unreliable temperature gauge, it can be prone to overheating.

4 – Hamilton Beach Gas Grill, 10-Minute Quick Assembly with 5 Burners (84341)

My rating

As a busy father, I need a propane smoker that can not only be set up quickly but will cook food in no time at all. Through doing some quick research I stumbled upon the Hamilton Beach Gas Grill. As the name suggests, you can assemble it in only 10 minutes. This means that you can start to cook your food as soon as possible.

But how effective is this propane smoker? Well, you will be happy to know that its design and features make it very functional. One of its impressive features is its five burners. They allow an output of 61000 BTUs (British Thermal Units). This means that you can enjoy your food in a fraction of the time of a conventional BBQ or oven.

Sitting on a large cooking area which is coated in porcelain, there is plenty of space to cook for both your family and friends. This makes it the ideal propane smoker for those special occasions. Alongside this, you can also utilize the convenient side burner that you can use for heating, sauteing and even boiling.

3 – Char-Broil Vertical Liquid Propane Gas Smoker

My rating –

If you are looking for a propane smoker that has a large cooking space, than the Char-Broil Vertical Liquid Propane Gas Smoker could be the perfect choice for you. One of the most affordable propane smokers on the market, this easy-to-use product features three adjustable, stainless-steel grates that have multiple level adjustments.

With 595 sq. inches of cooking surface alongside 7,566 cubic inches of cooking space, this smoker is one of the largest on this list. Not only is the size of this smoker impressive, but it also features two drawers. One drawer is for the water pan and the other for wood chips that will give your food a tantalizing oaky taste.

This smoker also has one rotary ignition. It is situated beside the main aluminized burner, supporting a remarkable 16,500 +  BTUs and a self-monitored temperature controller and gage. These features not only make it easy to adjust the heat of the smoker but also control the amount of smoke it?s producing.

You will also notice the cool-touch spring handles. They will protect your hands from burns. These are important for those with a growing family with kids that are prone to exploring!

Although this smoker has a lot of plus points, there are some downfalls that we should mention. Even though it has a temperature controller and gage, it?s important that you keep an eye on the meat/vegetables throughout the process to ensure that they don?t overcook.

The lack of a window also means that you can lose heat as you check on your food. This results in a longer cooking time ? which differs from the clever design of the Smoke Hollow Propane Smoker. The design of this smoker also makes it a little challenging to set up, which could be a major downside for novice users.

2 – Napoleon LEX 605 Built-In Grill with Infrared Rotisserie (BILEX605RBIPSS), Propane Gas

My rating

What I love about this propane smoker is its large capacity of 850 square inches. This makes it easy to cook an array of food in one go. With a built-in temperature gauge and sleek stainless steel design, this smoker is built to last ? unlike some of its cheaper counterparts.

Despite its rigid structure, you can transport it because of it’s lightweight. This makes it very useful if you want to take it on a road trip or you need to bring it to a loved one?s house. From the amount of traveling we do as a family, we found this feature very convenient.

Unlike the Smoke Hollow, Napoleon controls the amount of food drippings by incorporating stainless steel sear plates. This extraordinary feature will guarantee that your meat stays moist, with little clear up needed once you have served the food.

1 – Masterbuilt 20050716 Thermotemp Propane Smoker

My rating

Even though this smoker is on the pricier end of the spectrum, the strong build, and features that the Masterbuilt has make it great value for money. Like the Smoke Hollow, this smoker has a window. This allows you to check your food while it?s cooking.

However, what makes this product even better than our number five choice is its safety shut-off valve. This feature alongside the fuel gauge makes it a great choice for those with a young family like myself.

Masterbuilt’s dual door design (like the Smoke Hollow) allows you to add wood chips into the smoker without losing any heat. This alongside the built-in thermostat will maintain a consistent temperature throughout the cooking process. It’s an ideal feature for those wanting to enjoy the company of their friends or family whilst their food cooks beautifully.

I found the design of the Masterbuilt to be useful whilst preparing a meal for my family. I didn?t have to worry about the food being undercooked or about any of the heat escaping the smoker.

Another good feature, which can help you with cooking a large quantity of food is the capacity of this smoker. I could easily fit burgers, whole chickens and ribs into it.
